If the extension window does not automatically appear on your screen, ensure it is turned on. Click the Chromebook Recovery Utility extension. Open the recovery extension: Click Extensions at the upper right corner of the browser. Then all the data on the media will be removed. Step 2: Choose Erase recovery media and then pick the recovery media you want to erase from the drop-down menu. To Powerwash your Chromebook, click on your profile picture in the lower right-hand corner and navigate to Settings > Advanced > Reset > Powerwash. Download: Chromebook Recovery Utility (Free) Create Recovery Media Once the app is installed, launch it from the Apps page of your Chrome browser. Use the Restore Stock Firmware (full) option. Go to the Chrome Web Store and install the Chromebook Recovery Utility browser extension. Step 1: Open the Chromebook Recovery Utility app and click on the Settings icon. It's similar to the new Reset and Refresh functionality in Windows 10. It'll delete locally stored user data and restore the Chromebook back to its factory state, but it won't reinstall the operating system. The Powerwash is akin to hitting a factory reset button. In any of these cases, you might need to completely reinstall the operating system. Older Chromebooks and Chromeboxes actually have physical recovery buttons. The Esc + Refresh method is for newer Chromebooks. (The Refresh key is located where F3 would be on a typical PC keyboard.) Your Chromebook will boot straight to recovery mode. The script will flash the backup BIOS back onto your Chromebook. Next, press Esc + Refresh on the keyboard and hold down the Power button. Answer the script’s questions, connecting the USB drive containing your BIOS backup file and pointing the script at it. Note: On some Chromebook models: Press and hold Esc + Maximize, then press Power button. Step 2: Enter recovery mode Chromebook: Press and hold Esc + Refresh, then press Power button. Perhaps you tried installing Linux and something went awry, maybe you went poking around in the Developer Mode and made an irreversible change, or perhaps you got unlucky and downloaded a Canary Build that crashed the system.
